I ditched the stock pin and just bought a long hardened bolt, put a lock washer on it, and tightened down the racke. The bolt is long enough to run all the way through the receiver. On the end I put another lock washer and a nylock nut on top of that. No loctite anywhere and that rack is never coming loose.
I run Enve carbon DH bars on my 29er cut down to 780. Before that I ran Kore's at the same width for about 2 years. Wide bars rule.
Great interview Kirt. Pay no mind to the haters. It was great getting to meet you on the All Ride Tour a few weeks ago after watching you race on television for years back in the day. You are a legend in my mind and I thought it was great to see you interview the fastest downhiller the world has ever seen.
One more thing. If you are going to try a 29er make sure the tires are setup tubeless. If not you are lugging around an extra 200g per wheel in tubes that make the whole bike feel sluggish while hindering traction at the same time.
The problem with most 29ers is that the geometry sucks. There are very few that have a slack enough head angle and short enough stays to impress someone with strong riding skills. I'm currently riding a Stumpy 29r FSR with a 140 fork, custom valved rear shock, and an eccentric shock bushing to get the geometry where it needs to be. The new EVO looks like it will have the same geometry as my 2011 setup. I love my bike. No problems going faster than anyone else who works at my shop whether they are riding Enduros, or Mojo HD's, or Nomads. And the bike jumps and corners really well. Give the industry a couple more years to get the geometry, tires, and suspension ironed out and I think a lot of people will switch over. But if you don't, that's cool. There is nothing wrong with 26" wheels. They roll too.
I'm impressed Race Face. All you need to do now is get rid of the shim system for preloading the bottom bracket bearings and go with a system that does not require taking the cranks on and off to get it just right. That issue aside, great work on the new line, really digging it.
Looks like there is a special crown race on Keene's bike that is a little taller than stock (just one more thing that makes this bike far different from the one you can get). If anyone knows where to get a crown race like this one, I want one.
MAKE A SHORT CAGE SHIMANO!!! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
The price on that Tomac Primer is amazing! Is that retail? Looks to be a killer bike for the money.
Move spoke nipples to the outside, make it tubeless, and cut the price in half and you would get my business. Until then, these rims will only be for SC pros and dentists' kids.
Does Mountaincycle know that the cranks they put on there are for an xc double setup with the large bolt circle that will accept a 38t ring at the smallest? Also, that ring is pinned and ramped guys. I know it is not built up yet, but how can we take you seriously with stuff like this?
There is no denying the industry is pushing 29ers but unless you have ridden a 29er with comparable travel an geometry to a 26" bike your judgments have no value, only prejudiced ignorance. I like 29ers but I could care less if you ride one. I'm no kool aid drinking evangelist trying to convert anyone to my point of view or prevent them from riding a 29er like most PinkBikers treating them as if riding one means you have joined some kind of cult. I think the old adage "Don't knock it until you've tried it" applies here. Lastly, if looking weird is the main argument for staying away from 29ers then I'm afraid the industry already has you in their evil clutches... whooohahahahaha. About Us
